This is a very exciting day for my wife and me as we are attending our eldest’s son graduation from college.  You might know him as Zack the other half of this music project. You see in as a musician you pretty much have to keep your day job. We are very proud of him. He wants to continue on to University where in conjunction with his college certificate he can graduate with a degree in 2 years. He will end his academic career in debt of course but a reasonable amount.  If we lived in France his education would be subsidized even more. If we were Native Canadians he might walk out with no debt.

As a species are we getting dumber or is the level of stupidity increasing?

My score when I tested 12 years ago was 142 which put me well above average. Einstein’s IQ was 160. What does this mean? It doesn’t mean anything if you don’t apply it. I believe that there are all kinds of intelligence and that an IQ score does not come close to measuring them all. For example no matter how hard I try I cannot grasp the basic concepts of mechanics. Put me around a car and I turn into an idiot. Now my youngest son is a natural at anything mechanical and he can fix just about anything. I remember when he was 2 years old his mom and I came out to the living room one morning and he was sitting there with a beaming smile of pride. He had ripped off the entire baseboard and trim from the window, cut it all up and made a beautiful box for his mom. This is at 2. Now we praised him up and down and did not let on that he had destroyed the window. I still cannot figure out where he found all my tools. Now here is the stupid part. I went out got new materials and fixed everything he had taken apart. The next morning he had done it again only he built something else. Who was the genius here?

Lewis Terman (1916) developed the original notion of IQ and proposed this scale for classifying IQ scores:

I think that we are over time going to breed ourselves out of existence if we don’t smarten up. What’s the point of doing something clever or creating a great piece of art if there is no one to recognize the accomplishment. It’s hard to do when everyone is at the UFC championships. I will leave you with one more preview of a fictional movie called Idiocracy. If you have not seen it you should. I realize it is an exaggeration of a situation but it gets s the point across. If we don’t start placing a higher value on intelligence and education were fucked.

Who Hijacked Reality / #48 The book of Awesome, Awesome for who?

While listening to CBC radio today the hosts where discussing a particular website that they had brought to peoples attention a while back.   http://1000awesomethings.com/.  Now since then this site has won awards and has over 13 million hits. The author Neil Pasricha is counting down from 1000 and todays entry is at #517. Since the site is so popular the author now has a book deal and the book is out. It is called The Book of Awesome. I’m sure it will be a best seller.

Ok what is the big deal? Why is this site so popular? In order to answer this question I of course checked out the website. The site is great looking and of course most people want to hear something good that makes their day. Something they can relate to. They want to feel good. If that is what you want then this is the site for you. My site will not offer things daily that make you feel good  but I will offer you my opinion on life. It probably will not be what you want to hear but I will do my very best to bring you the truth.

Now in scanning through the website I read about 300 or so of things that are awesome. Now if I was someone who lived in a 3rd world country I’m afraid that those awesome things would not apply to me because I would be mostly worried about getting food and not dying. I would not be trying to hear #517 That clicking sound of winding anything up.   Or  #518 Napping with somebody else or #519 Glue movies  or #520 When a baby falls asleep on you.

These are the last 4 posts on the website and while they are great in a world where things are fine 2/3 of the world is not in that situation. Some people are worried about daily war or dying from disease. Now these are things that we in the civilized world don’t want to hear about. So keep focusing on Awesome things and the new book that is awesome.

I wonder what a person’s list might be like who lives in a country where things are not so awesome.

#999 – My mother finally died from aids, so now she will not suffer anymore    Awesome

#998 – It finally rained so now we will have fresh water   Awesome

#997 – Today is my first day of school and I am 12     Awesome

Look my point is this. Sure the things on the website are probably awesome but for who. Maybe we really should make a much better effort as a species to make sure things are awesome for everyone. This is not intended to take anything away from Neil Pasricha and his website. It’s an excellent website but would it not be better if everyone around the world could relate to all the awesome daily posts instead of 1/3 if that of the world.

Here is what would be really AWESOME,

#999 – All nuclear weapons are destroyed and contained   Awesome

#998 – All preventable Poverty and disease eliminated by the efforts of humanity working globally   Awesome

You continue the list. I guess I just like to think  big and have faith in humanity because I really think that we are AWESOME when we stop acting like idiots and start dealing with reality.

Last night my wife corralled me into watching the Biggest Loser again with her. I love spending time with my wife so I tried very hard to keep my mouth shut. It didn’t work. Their challenge was to go to the area with the fattest cities and promote being healthy. Well Texas heads that list with 5 of the 10 fattest cities. Off to Texas they go. Their goal is to organize a 5k run. They get on the radio stations and promote. It works because this show is huge in the states. They do the run people cry. People are inspired. One lady said that she had to take a motorized cart in Wal-Mart so she was amazed that she completed the run. More sob stories and triumph highs. That’s great but most of these people will just go back to the same life they have and that is the sad part. You don’t need to be on a show to change your life.

When one of the contestants was talking about herself she said” I have always been a bigger girl” What does that mean? State the facts, you are obese, fat, very dangerously overweight. Don’t beat around the bush it is like AA you have to admit the problem.

Well I said I tried to be quiet but I could not. When I heard the statistic that by the year 2040 75% of Texas will be obese I was amazed at the stupidity of people. Texas spends 10 billion dollars annually on health issues directly related to obesity. At what point do you recognize that you are unhealthy and fat and you not only are willing to do something but you do? At what point do you realize that you must be responsible for your health?

Stop eating this shit it is killing you

The feeling I get from most people is that they are waiting for something to push them on. Take charge of your own life and quit your whining. Stay away from the fast food joints.

I have a great Idea. If you even have one little doubt that what you are about to do is not healthy for you don’t do it. I am absolutely for choice both healthy and not. We all need the right to choose but you need to choose wisely. Imagine all the fast food restaurants, cigarette companies, beer companies and any other company that puts out unhealthy products not being able to sell their product because no one wants it. By the way get off your couch and go out and do something you know exercise. Now the children in Canada are considered not fit enough. They don’t get enough exercise.

This is all about choice so don’t believe you have to have that Big Mac and fries.

This statistic says it all. The younger generation will be the first generation that will die before their parents.

Come on people wake up and stop eating all that shit that is definitely not good for you.

Stop your whinning and complaining about how bad your feeling and all of your health issues and take charge of your life. You don’t need constaint praise for how good your doing. You didn’t need praise to eat the food.

The soul, one of the most misunderstood and misused words in the world. What does it really mean? My favourite band is called Collective Soul. I have heard a young child called an old soul. Does that mean you should call an older person a young soul? There is soul music. Then there is Mr. Soul music Barry White.

There is soul food. In the black culture especially in the 70’s you would have been a soul brother or a soul sister. The term has been linked with mind, body and soul. You could be soulless or have no soul. You could have the soul of the devil or the soul of an angel. The Beatles named one of their records Rubber Soul. Soul is the capital city of South Korea. It has been linked as akin to the spirit within. Does an animal have a soul? Does anything living have a soul? For that matter does the earth or even the universe have a soul?

What the Hell is a soul? Below is the dictionary definition and they seem to have at least 10 different meanings for just this one word. I am confused.

                                   A Soul Rising

Ok here is what I think. People usually associate the word with its spiritual nature. This is where I have a problem. The other definitions such as a type of food really don’t matter to me. When you take this giant leap of fantasy (you thought I was going to say faith didn’t you?) and assume without any evidence whatsoever you can basically create any type of monster fantasy you desire. Unfortunately this is one that billions have bought into and made their own. Have you considered the path of thinking you must follow when you say when I am dead my soul will leave my body and go wherever? I’ll just ask some simple question around this. Where does it go? How does it exist outside the body? What it is it made of? Are you still human as a soul? Taking into account the entire human population that has ever existed where are all the souls? Does this mean there is an alternate plane of existence? Who or what is in charge of the souls? How does it coexist within the body? Wow what a can of worms we have opened by speculating as truth on something that has no basis in fact. Maybe your soul is just our way of pretending we can live forever. I don’t want to live forever do you? I mean really think it through. Don’t worry about being a good soul try being a good human being and maybe then we can start to make some great changes around the world.

Who Hijacked Reality / #44 Things that make no sense to me.

Day to day we try to make sense of the world around us. Most things we see we just shake our head a bit and move on or we see most things as normal which is exactly what the parts of the world want you to do. Then there are those times when you just can’t make sense of it no matter how you twist and turn it. The other day I was watching a spot of TV with my lovely wife when on came this commercial for KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken for those who do not know, maybe you live in a country where you eat healthy foods), They were advertising their new Pink Bucket of chicken where they will donate .50 for every purchase. So you buy the bucket of death, food that just begs to be eaten so you can get fatter and fatter and become obese and when you’re done you can feel great because you just helped KFC conquer breast cancer. Now if you’re eating this bucket of unhealthy shit you’re probably going to light up a cigarette after your meal to relax but remember as you slowly enjoy each inhale of that beautiful cancer causing smoke that you just saved someone’s tits. Good for you. Now remember the cigarette companies will now donate .25 for every pack you buy to helping deal with obesity. So when you get sick either way your covered.

Another thing that makes no sense to me is this. Everywhere you look you can see advertisements for beer, liquor and wine but advertising for cigarette companies banned from TV and other spots. We don’t want our youth smoking but they need to get all liquored up. What the hell is the difference? Are they both not legal? So what group of idiots decided that one was OK and the other dangerous? There both dangerous you idiots. They both should be banned from advertising. Although they are legal the list of problems they and other drugs cause is enormous. Show me one example of long term drug use that has turned out for the best. How much money as a society do we spend trying to address the problems? Still with 0% positive outcome people still do drugs and we allow certain ones to be advertised as though it is the greatest thing in the world to do. This makes no sense to me. Buck up the suds because apparently it’s Ok according to someone in the government. There is nothing like hockey and beer to make for a great evening of fighting.

One more thing that makes no sense to me for this post. To be honest the list is very long but whose isn’t? I really get sick of this political battle in the USA between the Democrats and the Republican. The old 2 party system. Why not take the best of both parties and make a new party? Now you don’t have to deal with hardcore fringe from both sides. Don’t most Americans sit somewhere in the middle anyway? If both the parties lost an election at the same time it might force them to really examine what they need to change. Instead of this back and forth election wins thing that they have being doing for about 200 and something years maybe they need a real change. You can call the party The Responsible Government Party who has Taken an Oath not to Lie and Serve the People According to The Laws Of the Land. That might be something unique. Hell it might even work. What ideas do you have for a new party name and a Logo? How about a party  that also has nothing to do with any religion?

As long as we continue to do stupid things we will get stupid results. Maybe it’s time to look at scaling back on fast food restaurants and smoking and anything else that causes damage. One day America is going to wake up while being attacked and not be able to do nothing about it because there too fat or too sick. I am sure that other countries are actually planning this.
