Journal Entry #429

After looking at all the evidence for gods existence be it Allah, the Christian god or any deity that is claimed by humanity there really is no verifiable evidence that is strong enough to support the claim. It always reverts to one basic argument and this is the argument from ignorance or faith.

I have at one time or another refuted all the basic arguments for gods existence and so have many others who have done a much better job than I have but still people will eventually fall back to this position in defence of their personal god of choice.

The position is this;

You cannot prove god does not exist so until you do I will believe it to be true, I will have faith in my god. That`s it there really is nothing more to it. This is absolutely the worst reason to take something as true and yet billions of people do it. Once the delusion is accepted then from there it is about legitimizing the faith. There is no talking or convincing someone who want to believe until they are willing to listen to reason. Once they are willing to listen to reason and accept reality then there is no reason to believe in what is probably not true.

There are several desires that fuel the belief depending on the chosen god and none of them are based in reality. It gets crazy as the delusion deepens and the layers of the onion get thicker and thicker.

The evidence is very weak for the existence of any god and the obvious proof of this is that one has to have faith in the first place. If there really was credible evidence faith would not be a requirement. What I have just said is very important and probably the most profound statement I can make.

Think of all the millions if not gazillions of things we cannot proof or disprove and then tell me how many of them you take as true. So if you are a believer why don`t you take those things as true? What propels you to think that despite no verifiable evidence (and please don’t tell me that there is credible evidence because even though you think there is there is not) what you believe is true. No, I am not being arrogant even though you may think I am and I am sure you as a believer will deny what I am saying as long as it can be reasonably refuted you have not met the burden of proof for your claim so it is probably not true. Yet still people will believe.

I am certainly not naive in any way to think that I can change a believers mind but that will not change what is true. Based on the fact that the burden of proof has not been met for the claim of god it is probably not true and that is a very high degree of probability.

Faith in the sense in believing something to be true despite any credible evidence is ridiculous. So I urge people to stop basing their life on false desires.

Until people are willing to use reason and science as a grounding for reality they will continue to fall back on the argument from ignorance no matter what I or anyone else says. That is reality.

If you scan through my blog posts that I have spent the last year writing you will find a common theme and I do believe every argument presented for god refuted. If you have a new argument to offer I am more than willing to listen but I will warn you that my bullshit meter is finely tuned so make it a good one. I have spent the last year promoting truth and positive solutions for the problems I believe delusional thinking leads to.  I also realize I am in the minority and in many cases will be hated for my view but that is fine as I believe I am in good company.

The truth is that faith in god is grounded in ignorance.

Less than 10% of Christians have actually read the bible that they take as the word of their god. Does this mean they rely on their leaders to tell them what they need to know? Is this a good way to live your life? Leaving the responsibility for your possible salvation to someone else? I am not a believer but I certainly will not leave any part of my life in someone else’s hands without doing some investigating. So was Jesus real?

I will show you 2 videos that have opposite messages.

The Case For Christ 1/7

I look for Jesus and any credible evidence for god. If god does exist then that is the way it is. I can chose to accept it or not but if there is credible evidence for it and I am all bout truth then I would be a hypocrite if I did not. The idea is to step back and look at all the evidence from an unbiased position. This is what I try to do.

I will not present all the evidence either way here just an overview. That will be your search if you are willing.  Here is a very important point that I keep running into.

Gary David Currie Let me make this perfectly clear for the faithful. Before you can use the bible as a valid source for evidence of god you must first prove that god exists. if you do not you are using circular logic. They are constantly quoting bible verses thinking this is evidence. It is not valid as evidence for gods existence it is just evidence that there are bible verses.

In the Case for Christ by Lee Stroble he attempts to document his journey from an atheist to a Christian by explaining his search for evidence. He starts of by sayinbg that he is a journalist and so he approached this from that perspective. Here is his bio.

Lee Patrick Strobel (b. January 25, 1952 in Arlington Heights, Illinois) is a writer, creationist, former journalist and former megachurch pastor. He is the author of several books, including four which received ECPA Christian Book Awards (1994, 1999, 2001, 2005)[1] and a series which addresses challenges to a Biblically inerrant view of Christianity.[2] Strobel also hosted a television program called Faith Under Fire on PAX TV,[3] and runs a video apologetics web site.

The problem is that while he says he will do investigative reporting on this topic he does not. All his sources are bias. He says lets ask the experts. Well the experts are all Christians and though they present an interesting case the basic premise is flawed. The bible is their source for truth and justification. Very bias. The evidence is weak that they do present but they approach it with zeal and conviction. You watch and be the judge.

In the God who wasn’t there I feel he takes a more balanced approach while being  a bit bias. He asks questions that the Christians will not ask.  He offers evidence that after searching his sources appears to be credible. This counters many of the arguments that Christian apologetics are in love with. He talks to people on both sides of the issue.

The God Who Wasn’t There is a 2005 independent documentary written and directed by Brian Flemming. The documentary questions the existence of Jesus, examining evidence that supports the Christ myth theory against the existence of a historical Jesus, as well as other aspects of Christianity.[1]

Was Jesus real? I don’t know.  This statement was in the comments below the video for Case For Christ.

Ultimately what it comes down is this; Jesus was a great liar, was really insane, or was who he claimed he was – the son of God. Let the evidence speak for itself.

I hope you can see by now that these are definitely not the only possibilities.  Maybe he wasn’t real or was just a man who never claimed anything. Maybe he was a myth as a combination of many men of the time who were preachers.

1Christ

Even if I believe he was a man who lived during his time it will stop at that. The claim that he is the son of god will require some amazing evidence which seems to be unavailable so far. I can go looking for Jesus all I want to but I will never find him and I would think by now any evidence that was credible would have surfaced.

Ultimately your search is up to you and if you actually find anything credible please let me know.  I often am accused of being unwilling to accept evidence that is presented to me as credible, that I really don’t want to accept that god is real. I have been told in fact just today when I asked someone their definition of truth that “Jesus is truth”. So where is he? I really am looking for truth no matter where it leads me but most poeple are not and that is the problem.
