Journal Entry # 322

January 19th, 2011

I have found at least one commonality in all religions. There is one thing that is present in all of them so far and it is this. It is summed up in a comment I received when I asked someone to take a look at one of my videos and share it. The video was for the song “Bigfoot the Atheist”. You can watch it at the videos page on our website. If you are not here already it is www.thefreeman.net .

“Well, like I said before, I don’t believe in Bigfoot because no one ever found their bones. But I believe in Jesus because He does stuff for me! But, I will share the video just on account of the music and its fun watching those guys. :)

This one comment displays so much and yet presents the simplicity of religious beliefs. The optimal phrase is “he does stuff for me”. This demonstrates #4 in what I call “The Code’ which is a set of beliefs I have designed for myself and anyone else that wants to follow them.

#4 Everything we do we do for selfish reasons, there is no such thing as a selfless act.

Humans believe because there is always something in it for them, a reward or fear of a punishment. This person has just been open and honest about the matter.   Upon talking with this person further they shared with me that their belief in god is derived from certain events being fulfilled in their eyes that they attribute to their god, to put it simply god in their view brought them material gain when they asked for it.

The whole idea of god is really not that complicated when you take away all the smoke and mirrors and threats. It is all about personal gain. What else could it be about?

It appears that as a species we are trying to circumvent the natural laws in the universe but of course this is just not realistic. The truth is that we are bound by these laws and must work within them. It really doesn’t matter how much you believe something if it is not true it will still remain not true. You can’t get what is not available to have.

Now the other important part of the comment is this;

“Well, like I said before, I don’t believe in Bigfoot because no one ever found their bones”.

So they do not believe in anything that feel will not fulfill their desires unless there is undisputable evidence and have found that even then they don’t believe. They want verifiable proof but in their belief sytem verifiable takes on an entirely new definition. It becomes self verification fuelled by their desires.

To sum it up if your desires are not based on reality then you are indulging in a delusion, a fantasy. How deep you go will only complicate the problem.

I leave you with this question; what religion would a Bigfoot be?

Journal Entry # 264

November 23rd, 2010

Since I have started this journal / blog I have presented many ideals and concepts which have generated discussion and growth on my part. I presented a set of ideals that I call “The Code”. In my short life here on this earth I have tried to understand why I do the things I do. “The Code” is the conclusion of this understanding at this point in my life. Very few have agreed with all 4 ideals in The Code and even when they agree I think the definitions they apply are not in line with mine. The one ideal I have had the most opposition to is “SELFISHNESS”.

“The Code”

Truth – I either acknowledge it or I don’t.

Responsibility – I am responsible for all of my actions within the house rules.

Selfish – Everything I do is selfish. There is no selfless act.

Offend – I can only offend myself.

Understanding oneself is the path to positive change. If I realize why I do things and the consequences of these actions it will enable me to see beyond my actions. I can only change myself.

TheSelfishGene

Why do people think that there is a difference between our actions being selfish and non selfish? We are raised to see doing for others as an act of selflessness but in reality it is not. Does this mean we cannot do things for others, of course we can but as we are doing them ultimately we are doing the act for ourselves. Often times is not a conscious act of selfishness but never the less it is still selfishness and here is why. Everything we do must be originated within us. It will be acted upon for reasons we feel will benefit us at that particular moment.

This is just the truth. How can it be any other way? We are only in control of our minds and again all things emanate from there in regards to our lives.

selfish

Now that I understand that all I do I do for myself how will this help me to reach my goals. Since in its basic form it is all about me I will now have to decide what it is I want in all areas in my life and how my desires fit into the overall universe.

I will ask myself: To think of the consequences of my actions directly and indirectly.

If I feel like lying to tell the truth.

If I feel like hurting in any way to help heal.

If I feel like cheating to be honest.

If I feel like ignoring to pay attention.

If I feel anger to find a calm solution.

If I feel like avoiding to face head on.

I hope I conveyed a message of how the truth of being selfish just is. It is neither bad nor good unless we decide it to be so.

Journal Entry #65

The Codes #3 ideal – Selfishness, everything we do we do for selfish reasons. There is no such thing as a selfless act.

If you have been following my introduction of The Code you will notice this is the 3rd ideal. Now I usually can get some agreement from people who are dealing with reality in regards to the first 2 points I presented.  The truth & responsibility but when it comes to the 3rd and 4th points I start to lose people. The reason is that what I am presenting is not what we were brought up to believe as true.

The Code;

  1.      The truth; we either acknowledge it or we don’t
  2.     We are responsible for all of our thoughts and actions within the house rules.
  3.      Selfishness, everything we do we do for selfish reasons.
  4.      Offend, no one can offend you or insult you but yourself.

We were brought to believe that you can be unselfish that you help others and not always do things for yourself. You’re probably shaking your head right now saying that’s right. You can certainly do things for others and help or give to as many people as you want but you do this for selfish reasons. The mistake we make is that we view being selfish most of the time as a negative where I see it as just something that is or the truth.

Is Mother Teresa an example of  someone who is selfless?

Excerpt from my forthcoming book on The Code on Selfishness.

Upon hearing this statement I’m sure your reaction as well as mine was  something like this. Are you trying to tell me that I am selfish? I do things for people all the time without expecting anything back. This can’t be true. What about the man who gives up his life to save a little boy that was drowning in the river? He jumped in without thinking of himself. He was only thinking of saving that little boy and in the process of doing this heroic act he died. I am sure you can think of many similar stories where people have seemingly sacrificed their life in order to save another. Who are you to say that they are selfish? You’ve got a lot of nerve. I think you get the point. On the surface of the discussion you would appear to be right. It absolutely looks like a selfless act. We must be sure. Is this the truth?

The truth is no it is not a selfless act it is a selfish one. That does not make it any less heroic or make you any less of person for doing your good deeds. Here is why. First of all anything you do you must first make the decision to do it. Now it may appear to happen very fast but in order to act your brain thinks about first. Whatever decision you make will be based on what is best for you. You might think you do not expect anything back but in reality you do. You might expect to feel good for doing what you have done. In the case of the person who sacrifices themselves they might feel that they could not bear to sit and not help. There are a number of reasons to do something but you are still doing it for you. I am sure a number of emotions would come in to play to direct your decision. Whatever programming you have in your brain will direct you to make your decision.

Once you recognize this you have a better understanding as to why people do the things they do. You can now place things truthfully in the proper perspective. This understanding is the key as to why people do good things or terrible things. This will factor into our understanding as the book progresses.

selfless 1          selfless 2

                  Are these selfless acts?

Once you understand and acknowledge the ideals I am presenting you are truly as free as you can become. You now know that you have the power in your life and that no one can take it from you but that you can only give it. This is about understanding yourself and that is where everything for you flows. Remember we are all the stars of our own lifes.
